When we hear about chicken with dark meat, black skin and bones, we usually think of Ayam Cemani, a rare and expensive chicken from Indonesia. But did you know that there are other chickens with dark meat and bones? The level of darkness can vary and some of these types of chickens can be related to each other.

Let’s look at five types of chickens with black skin, meat and bones. 


Chickens with black meat and bone do not always have black feathers. One of them even has white plumage. Exciting, right? So here are five dark meat chickens that are affordable

There is no doubt that Ayam Cemani is the king of blackness. This is a rare and expensive type of chicken from Indonesia. Some people believe that the breed is the offspring of Ayam Bekishar.

Ayam Bekishar originated by crossing green jungle fowl and domesticated breeds. There is evidence in this that it is tricky to get it because not all creatures are fertile. Others believe that this species is a landrace species. 

These black chickens are bred and used for their “mysterious” qualities. They are often sought after in Asian countries and are said to have medicinal properties. In the Philippines, Ayam Cemani is called “medicinal chicken” by many people, although it is not known why the chicken becomes medicinal. The price of Ayam Cemani is also something that raises everyone’s eye. In the Philippines, a day-old Ayam Cemani chick will cost between P800 and P1,200 depending on the breed.

 Silkie is another dark meat chicken with a unique appearance. Silkie (sometimes spelled Silky) is a breed of chicken named for its typically soft, silky and satin-like plumage. The breed has many other unusual characteristics, such as skin and bones, blue ears, and five toes on each foot, while most chickens have only four.

 Silkies are so distinctive that they have been described as the poodles of the chicken world. The scientific name of Silkie is Gallus domesticus. Other names for the Silkie are Chicken Silkie, Bearded Silkie or Bantam Silkie. Silkies have other colors such as buff, but white is the most popular. They were originally from China.

Kadaknath, also called Kali Masi (fowl having black flesh), is an Indian type of black meat chicken. They come from Dhar and Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, Bastar (Chattisgarh) and neighboring areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan, covering about 800 square kilometers (2,100 km2). These birds are breed by poor tribals and Adivasi groups. Kadaknat is considered sacred; after Diwali, it is sacrificed to the goddess. There are three varieties: jet black, gold and pencil. The meat has a fat content of 0.73 to 1.03%, compared to 13 to 25% for most other types of chicken. The meat of this breed carries the Geographical Indication (GI Tag) approved by the Government of India on July 30, 2018.

Although there is no clear evidence, it is believes that Kadaknath  and the Ayam Cemani of Indonesia are very similar in appearance and level of darkness. We have no information yet if there is a pure form of Kadaknath.

4. Svarthöna, the Swedish black chicken

Svarthöna, Bohuslän-Dals svarthöna, or Swedish cock, hen or hen, is a Swedish landrace of Swedish dark-skinned chicken believed to be descended from the Ayam Cemani/Kadaknath breeds of chicken transported by sailors from Mozambique to Norway in seventeen. century.
 
The current version of Svarthöna has been given the tatus of a landrace. Swedish genetics can be traced back to a group of chickens that arrived in Sweden in the early 19th century. In 1956, two brothers bought this flock in Bullarebygd. The Swedish breed association has kept the Svarthöna in the gene bank since 1991. 
 
A rooster can weigh up to 2 kilograms, while a hen does not exceed 1.5 kilograms. Small eggs (38-48 g) with a large yolk. Svarthöna has some flight capabilities.
 
The cause of the black color found in the skin and associated tissues is a variant of the EDN3 gene, a trait shared with the Chinese Silkie, Indonesian Ayam Cemani and Vietnamese Black H’Mong.

The H’mong chicken is a rare breed of meat from the H’mong tribe that lives in the northwestern regions of Son La, Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Bac Can. Like any other chicken, this chicken will fight among itself to establish a dominance. Like Sumatran chickens, they can kill themselves and stop fighting when the leader of the flock is built.
 
H’mong chicken has black meat and bones. When these chicks hatch, their feathers are black until they are about 5 months old, then the color will start to develop, except for the females. 75% of females come in solid colors like solid black or blue. This chicken also has beneficial medicinal and nutritional properties. This is why it is often eaten as a favorite dish and is often found on restaurant menus in Ha Noi, Vietnam.

Ulikba chicken is not an official breed of chicken. The word “ulikba” is a informal Filipino word meaning “black.” Ulikba chickens are believed to be the offspring of Ayam Cemani or Kadaknath. Their blackness is different in levels. Some are all black with black feathers, and some cross with ground chickens while others have different colors of plumage. Chicken Ulikba is a local version of Ayam Cemani.
