 Follow these steps on how to grow spinach from seed:

  • Grow vegetables in moist but well-drained soil or compost.
  •  Winter spinach plants need a sunny spot; Summer vegetables do best in partial shade, so they are among the easiest vegetables to grow in the shade.
  •  Sow the seeds in shallow drill – about 1 inch deep.
  •  If you are sowing more than one row, plant each row about 14 inches apart.
  •  Cover the seeds with a little soil.
  •  Once the seeds have sprouted, thin them between 3 to 5 inches apart. Thining is very important and you have to be ruthless.
  •  Fertilize plants regularly with a water-soluble plant fertilizer.
  • Sow the seeds every three to four weeks so that they are available throughout the growing season.
  •  Keep the spinach well – water the bottom of the plant. Spinach can be cut over and over again and last for months and months. It’s important to water them well.

Choosing a bed for growing vegetables can prevent the problem of your garden having poor soil or the wrong type of soil for the crops to grow well – as vegetables prefer to be neutral in the soil alkaline.
 
Bed linen provides good drainage and is easy to maintain as an idea for keeping a tidy garden. You can fill them with rich soil, which works, work in 2 to 4 inches of compost before you plant the spinach seeds.

How to grow spinach indoors

It is easy to grow spinach indoors on the windowsill. If you are growing herbs indoors, place your vegetables next to them so you can take care of them all at once.
 
If the seeds are planted in fall, put the pots on a sunny windowsill because there are few hours of sunlight. Don’t let the plants get hot or too cold – so don’t put them directly on top of a radiator, for example.
 
If you are growing vegetables in spring, place the pot where it will have shade. 

Plant vegetable seeds in pots at least 6 inches wide and plant the seeds 1/2 inch deep, with each plant about 3 inches on a side. Keep the vegetables well, but do not allow the soil to become saturated with water.

 How often should you water spinach? 

You should water and fertilize the spinach plant regularly, but try not to wet the leaves. The goal is to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Regular watering is important especially during the hot weather to prevent the plant from “bolting” or producing flowers – if they do, the leaves will be taste bitter.

 Other ways to care for spinach include:
 

  • Protect spinach planted in the fall from the cold by covering with fleece or a cloche.
  • Cover spinach during hot weather to prevent the soil from drying out and vegetables from wilting. You can do this by planting them next to a green – or runner – bean, which, as they grow, will provide shade to protect the tender spinach plants from the heat of the sun.

How to grow and harvest vegetables
