Plantation Agriculture

Plantation
Agriculture

There are different agricultural methods used across the world.Plantation Agriculture is one of them. Plantation Agriculture is the clearing of forest or land to create an area for cultivation for a single crop, which is grown in large quantities.

This type of intensive, commercial farming system is usually owned by a company or government, and the owner employs workers on the farm.

 The climate of the farm

Although the plant can be found in the United States, they are mostly found in tropical and subtropical areas. In fact, the best climate for the plant is a hot and humid area. These are usually near the equator.

Examples of countries with plantations are Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Brazil and Kenya. Plantation areas are not only humid, but are often surrounded by dense vegetation, such as rainforests.
Crop angle

Various crops are grown in this garden. The list below provides some examples of crops.

  •  cocoa
  •  Coffee
  •  Tea
  • Cane
  • the tobacco
  • plastic
  • Cotton
  • Pineapple
  • bananas
  • Palm oil

Most of these traditions use one person to do something every day. After all, they are cash crop.

Cash Crops are crops that are grown for their high commercial value. This type of crop is grown for sale rather than for use by the grower.
This means that crops are grown for economic reasons. These crops are sold and exported outside the country where the crop itself is located.

Characteristics of plantation agriculture

Business side

These farms are highly commercialized in the sense that the products grown there are crops. These crops are often grown in low and middle income countries and exported to attract foreign investment, mostly from countries in North America and Europe. As a result, high yield generates a lot of money, which is important for the commercial side of the garden. .

Large scale operation

Farming is done on a large scale and requires a lot of labor to produce high quality crops that meet high demand. Such a business process means that a large return is obtained, which requires many workers. These workers are laborers who work in the field for long hours, especially during harvest.

Monocultures

Crops are essentially monocultures.

Differences occur when crops are grown in the field. Monocultures are an important part of horticulture because they allow for the multiplication of crops. However, monocultures can create environmental problems because they can cause the spread of diseases and pests since only one type of crop is grown. This eventually reduces the quality of the land and leads to the death of various species of life. This can have a negative impact on crop growth, therefore producing turnover, leading to loss of profits for crop owners. Harvesting and processing, because only one type of crop is grown in the whole field

Innovation and development

These farms benefit from well-developed transportation and strong communication networks. This, combined with the economic benefits from agriculture, leads to the research and development of agricultural machinery to improve the organization and speed of growth and harvest. Many crops use these advanced machines, which allow for faster crop rotation and therefore greater economic benefits.

Importance of plantation agriculture

Although growing crops may seem like an attractive farming method, it is important to remember that this labor intensive farming has both negative and positive aspects. The beauty of the farm

Plantation Agriculture is considered important for a variety of reasons. These include; job opportunities, government revenue and modern development.

 Job opportunities

Agriculture provides many employment and income opportunities to the community. Crops are often found in developing countries; therefore, it can be difficult for many citizens to find work and earn money. This is due to challenges such as poor working conditions, low wages, unemployment and discrimination in the workplace. However, these crops provide employment opportunities to the community, including work such as planting, harvesting and processing crops. This guarantees a stable income for the workers.

Income to government

Agriculture also provides revenue to the government as it is a major foreign trade market. In fact, foreign companies can use the land as crops and export crops, which brings money to the country through foreign exchange. This is important for developing countries as it helps them integrate effectively through globalization and economic benefits.

Modern development

Crops drive innovation and industrial growth. Since crops are used in many agricultural activities, the development of technology and machinery to increase the processing time is important. This promotes the growth of the food processing industry.

Agro-industries are companies that produce agricultural equipment.

Crops also support agricultural research and development, including new varieties of crops that are resistant to disease and pests.
Disease-resistant crops are important in agriculture because if one crop becomes diseased, all the crops around it become infected because of the proximity of the field and because it is one type of plant. Therefore, developing disease-resistant plant varieties helps all plants to grow well.

Issues of
Plantation Agriculture

Despite these positive aspects of gardening, there are many problems associated with farming.

 Colonial rule :

The history of plantations is linked to colonialism. In fact, the British colonists created the plant during the colonial period (between the 15th and 19th centuries). Large tracts that were considered suitable for agriculture were turned into plantations, and slave labor was exploited.
Crops are still considered to be exploited due to companies that use cheap labor in other countries and depend on the production of different crops. It is neocolonialism, because developed countries take advantage of developing countries by having crops.

Competition:

Other issues related to crops include competition against crops. Because of the employment opportunities of agriculture and the income generated from such work, the standard of living in countries with plantations is increasing. This leads to increased production costs, which leads to competition between crops. Some fields may find it difficult to get the high incomes that other fields offer or to create jobs as the standard of living continues.
Also, clustering becomes a problem in the field. This means that local farmers cannot compete with large foreign companies and are pushed out of business.

Crop Failure:

Crop failure can also occur in cultivated fields, especially where climate change has a significant impact on agriculture. If crops do not need to be harvested due to poor harvests, there is a shortage of labor demand, which causes workers to work without pay.

environmental problems:

Plants are criticized for their lack of support. This is due to high levels of greenhouse gases, their impact on biodiversity, soil erosion and pollution. Agriculture uses heavy machinery for growing, harvesting, processing and transporting crops. These processes produce greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide. These gases contribute to global warming and can affect the environment.
