Spacing Tomato Plants: How
To Space Tomato Plants

Tomato plants that are well spaced will be healthy and produce more fruit than those that are crowded or spaced apart. The size of your tomatoes depends on two things:

 the type of tomatoes you grow and how you plan to support the plants. Once you have this basic information, deciding how much to plant tomatoes is easy.

Why tomato spacing is important 

There are four main reasons to aim for well-spaced tomato plants:

  1. Disease prevention.

 Tomato plants can be susceptible to many diseases and if they are placed too close together, adequate ventilation can increase the risk of disease.

 2. Perfect fire. 

 Hot tomato plants need lots of sun for good growth. If you group plants together, the plants will shade their neighbors as they grow. 

3. Production. 

 I like to use all my space to grow, leaving little space for weeds to grow. Leaving tomatoes too far apart means you leave room for weeds to grow, miss out on valuable growing opportunities, and reduce your overall harvest.

 4. Less competition.

 As mentioned above, ventilation is reduced when plants are full, but this also means that they compete for water and food.
Give tomato plants enough space to promote good air circulation. This can help reduce the incidence of tomato disease. 

A types of tomatoes

Indeterminate – 

Unlike tomato plants that grow and stop, indeterminate varieties can reach six to eight meters in length. They stop growing only when the last frost kills the plant.

Also called vining tomatoes, they produce crops for a long time and grow best on strong supports such as tall wire frames, stakes or trellises. Tomatoes staked or trellised can be planted closer than those allowed to spread on the ground.

 

Good space for tomato plants

The distance between tomato plants depends on the type of tomato grown – determined or undetermined – and the type of support used. Trellis plants can accommodate plants closer than those allowed to spread to the ground. Of course, growing your own tomato plants has other benefits. They will not be able to suffer from diseases caused by the soil.

 determinate tomatoes – Dwarf determinate tomatoes, which are only 12 to 18 inches tall, stretch a foot or two.Tomatoes that are perfect will be planted on two legs

inderterminate tomatoes – This is where supporting your plants makes a big difference in terms of space. I plant perennial tomato plants that are 18 to 24 inches tall. They are always pruned during the growing season to control growth and promote good air circulation. And although I don’t let any of my tomato plants spread to the ground, if you prefer to leave your perennials bare, plant them three or four feet apart.

 How far apart to space the rows

When you grow in a garden or a bed, leave four feet between the rows to allow good air circulation and, in the case of gardens in the ground, to give you space to work around the plants.

keep on top of pruning

Now that you’ve properly divided your tomatoes, don’t neglect to prune them! Determinate tomatoes do not need to be pruned, but stake indeterminate tomatoes need to be pruned regularly to remove suckers, which promotes healthy and productive plants. It is not difficult to prune tomato seeds, but it should be done every 7-10 days.

 Suckers are grass shoots that grow in the crotch between the main stem and branches. suckers produce flowers and fruit and although leaving sucker can produce more tomatoes, the amount of fruit will be reduced. And of course the tree becomes a tangle of calves and small air circulation. 

In early summer, I let two or three suckers grow, but I rotate the rest every week or so. When the water suckers is 2-3 inches long, it is easy to remove it with your fingers. If you let them grow, you may need to find a way to prune the plants to get rid of the suckers properly.
