WHAT FRUITS AND VEGETABLES CAN RABBITS EAT?

 What fruits and vegetables can rabbits eat?

 Although most of us know that rabbits can eat carrots, did you know that there is a list of fruits and vegetables that rabbits can eat safely? It is true. Rabbits love fresh fruits and vegetables, and they can serve as treats and supplements. 

Adding new foods provides a variety of other foods, textures and tastes to increase the rabbit’s diet. They have increased water content, which supports kidney and intestinal health.
 
However, before making any nutritional supplements, you need to know what is good for your rabbit. While there are a variety of safe options, there are also a few fruits and vegetables that are considered not safe for rabbits. 

Proper nutrition is important for the health of your rabbit.

 Bananas:

 Because of their sugar content, bananas can contribute to obesity. You don’t have to avoid them completely, but you should limit the amount to avoid high blood sugar.

 Chard:

 Chard is an acceptable choice because it is dark green,tough and  leafy green. However, it must be fed in small amounts.

Flowering vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli:

 These vegetables can cause gas, so you should give them to rabbits a small quantity. 

Broccoli Stems and Leaves: 

Although broccoli florets should be kept small, “a small sample of the stem and leaves are allowed.

Fruits and vegetables that are dangerous for rabbits

A few fruits and vegetables are dangerous for your rabbit and should not be part of their diet.
 
 Avocado: 

Avocado is an oily fruit that contains a fungicidal toxin called persin, which can be fatal if eaten by rabbits. Persin is safe for humans, but toxic to rabbits. Rabbits react to poisonous fruit in different ways if eaten, with symptoms ranging from severe illness to death.

 Corn: 

Rabbits cannot digest of corn hull. Therefore, corn consumption can lead to gastrointestinal (GI) irritation or intestinal obstruction. Intestinal problems are conditions in which food passes through the intestines slowly. This can kill the rabbit, so it is important for the rabbit’s welfare to avoid any food that can cause it.

 Legumes: 

Beans, including large and kidney beans, and peas are high in carbohydrates. High intakes can lead to weight gain and/or cause digestive problems, including malabsorption, bloating, and diarrhea. Beans can also pose a choking hazard.


 Iceberg lettuce: 

Iceberg lettuce may contain lactucarium, which infects rabbits. Light colored lettuce is also high in water, providing less nutrients for your pet.

Onions:

 Vegetables that are part of the onion family, including chives, leeks and onions, should be avoided. Eating such by rabbits can cause blood diseases.

 Potatoes:

Eating potatoes for your rabbit can cause weight gain, constipation, diarrhea, and intestinal infections.
 Rhubarb: Rhubarb, especially its leaves, is rich in oxalic acid. If a rabbit consumes too much oxalate, it may not absorb calcium properly. Inadequate calcium intake can lead to damage to the kidneys, digestive system, and nervous system. 

Wild Mushrooms: 

These naturally occurring mushrooms kill rabbits. They can affect the rabbit’s nervous system and digestive system, including its liver.
